SWTOR: How to Save PVP: Part 1

Don’t get me wrong. SWTOR is a great game. It’s smooth, it’s nearly polished, and it had the greatest single player leveling system you could ever ask for. The kind of which I doubt we will ever see a developer invest to make again. Enjoy the modern RPG movies in your MMO, because it’s not likely that anyone will invest anytime soon to recreate it. I have big hopes for SWTOR. But let us be honest here for a second.

The current state of the game relies on end game PVP. And currently that is repetitive warzone playing. And, unless you are on top, this means it’s not at all fun for the casual. Me, I’m not casual. My win/loss ratio is great and my gear is coming along just fine. With all Battle Master and 3 pieces of War Hero, I’m just shy of being a DPS’ing nightmare. Life is good for me. It’s not so good for the consistent PUG groups we stomp on a constant basis. It takes roughly 8 warzones just to find a bit of competition. And these are the warzones you play for.

A prediction for SWTOR coming from this article’s predictions by analyst group that is apparently using a dart board for accurate readings. According to Cowen and Company, they predict that BioWare’s February subscriber base of 1.7M will be about 1.25M by March of 2013. Now while an idiot would think this is horrible, the rest of us know that would be amazing. A year later without expansion and surviving other major MMO releases and only losing 26% of your subscriber base would be the best statistics any modern MMO has ever seen with a major launch.

I think in real time, that today we could probably guess the 1.25M and be close to actual. By GW2 release we could ping the surface in August and probably be far below that. Saying the game only ever sits here on false promises for improvement and only ever does balancing patches, we can pretty much expect well below that in 2013. Does that make it a failure? No. 1M subscribers would still be amazing.

What SWTOR like every other MMO I have ever played has proven once again, is that your endgame is PVP. Make it amazing or miss out.

What SWTOR does have is a pretty decent system. It’s all working, it just needs the content. And while 1.2 missed out on delivering what most saw as basic features you should have had at launch, the free month says that you are willing to make it happen. There is also not a lot of forgiveness coming from the player base. And there shouldn’t be. You absorb practically all the resources from the PVP king making MMO studio, Mythic and you make the “ultimate” MMO and learn absolutely nothing from them on PVP. Absolutely nothing. It was as if BW sat Mythic in the corner and told them not to speak.

SWTOR PVP is missing the following:

Missed 1.2 Promises:

  • 8 Man Queues
  • Cross Server Queues
  • Ranked Warzones Bracket

We assume that these are coming soon. Or at least we hopeful that BW isn’t quite stupid enough to ignore it.

Future Ideas Still in Concept (Not Revealed to Public):

  • Improve Ilum (Open World PVP)

While these are all fine and dandy, they will mean nothing in comparison when GW2 comes and delivers Keep and Open PVP made at the start. Your PVPers will leave the game. And you will be left with, dungeon raiders.

What I propose are ideas that are both quick and involved. I want to help you, help yourself. I don’t want to see your PVP lose to another MMO. Without further ado, let’s get the ideas going:

Mr. Meh’s PVP Idea #1: Short Term: Ramping Dailies and Weeklies.

Currently the system is Daily Win 3, Weekly Win 9. I think these missions and rewards should ramp based off of game play. Winning 3 a day is easy. Most finish their Weekly by Wednesday. These are more than obtainable goals. I propose we change it to the following:

There are 4 levels of dailies. To get the next you need to complete the prior.

  • [Daily Basic] Play 3 Warzones
    • Reward is 100 Warzone Commendations
    • Unlocks availability for [Daily Standard]
  • [Daily Standard] Win 3 Warzones
    • Reward is 100 Warzone and 100 Ranked Commendations
    • Unlocks availability for [Daily Elite]
    • Unlocks Reset for following day’s [Daily Basic]
  • [Daily Elite] Win 6 Warzones
    • Reward is 125 Warzone and 125 Ranked Commendations and PVP Crafting Items
    • Unlocks availability for [Daily Elite]
  • [Daily Heroic] Win 9 Warzones
    • Reward is 150 Warzone and 150 Ranked Commendations and PVP Crafting Items

Players can pick up the Dailies and escalate their rewards and drive to win warzones. Once a player has completed the Daily Standard, that player can then pick up the next day’s Daily Basic. If the player is still currently on Daily Elite or Daily Heroic on Day 1, then on Day 2 the player can still strive to complete these along with the next day’s Dailies. If the player completes his or her’s Elite or Herioc prior to finishing Day 2’s Daily Standard, then that player can still unlock Day 2’s Elite and Heroic for completion. The system is designed so that players can still strive for higher rewards without fear of missing the next day’s option.

There are 4 levels of Weeklies. To get the next you need to complete the prior.

  •  [Weekly Standard] Win 9 Warzones
    • Reward is 100 Warzone and 100 Ranked Commendations
    • Unlocks availability for [Weekly Elite]
    • Unlocks reset for following week’s [Weekly Standard]
  • [Weekly Elite] Win 15 Warzones
    • Reward is 125 Warzone and 125 Ranked Commendations and PVP Crafting Items
    • Unlocks availability for [Weekly Elite]
  • [Weekly Heroic] Win 30 Warzones
    • Reward is 150 Warzone and 150 Ranked Commendations and PVP Crafting Items

Players can pick up the Weeklies and escalate their rewards and drive to win warzones. Once a player has completed the Weekly Standard, that player can then pick up the next week’s Weekly Basic. If the player is still currently on Weekly Elite or Weekly Heroic on week 1, then on week 2 the player can still strive to complete these along with the next day’s Weeklies. If the player completes his or her’s Elite or Herioc prior to finishing week 2’s Weekly Standard, then that player can still unlock week 2’s Elite and Heroic for completion. The system is designed so that players can still strive for higher rewards without fear of missing the next week’s option.
